The Art of Getting to YES: How Using Questions Correctly Inspires Action, Agreement, and Connection with Anyone

Do you consciously frame questions so the easiest answer is "Yes"? "We need to talk, can you meet me at noon?"Fear strikes the heart of most folks when they hear, "We need to talk..." from their boss or spouse. Heart rates soar, blood pressure rises, and concentration on anything else is pretty much toast. Unless the specific intent was to cause panic, one bit of questionable communication can ruin your day.

Effective communication is hard. Concise effective communication is an art. For those who don't have the gift, questions can even the playing field. That's how questions became the foundation of the author's career and inspired this short-read book.

People who ask brilliant questions are often more successful than people who give brilliant answers. It's like the old story about the difference between giving someone a fish or teaching them how to fish. One answer won't make your career, but skillfully asking the right questions might.

??? Personal and professional relationships are fed by trust. Properly using questions inspires trust. Most people look for a yes - action, obedience, or agreement - from customers, colleagues, families, and even horses. This short book addresses the reasons why you don't get the response you want and the unintended consequences of asking the wrong question.

Easy-to-understand and packed with illustrations, "The Art of YES" shares the 4 Types of Questions and teaches you to wield them effectively and responsibly. Has a question ever made you feel uncomfortable? If that wasn't the intent, what went wrong?

Written by Lynn Baber, best-selling author, World and National Champion horse trainer and breeder, and promoter of the concept of Message over Market. A serial entrepreneur, Lynn credits her success in large part to the savvy use of questions.

Interview with the author

Q - Aren't there lots of books about career change? Why do we need another one?

A - There are loads of career change books out there - I don't pretend this is the first! One of the problems with almost all career change books, though, is that they treat change as a one-off. "I hate my job, so if I make this one change, then everything will be great!"

But what happens if you don't like the second career either? If you go through a massive once-in-a-lifetime exercise, you can feel more demoralized than ever if it doesn't work out.

Q - So what makes the Career Change series different?

A - This Series isn't just about leaving the career you hate - it's about embracing an entirely new path for your future. In this book, you'll discover how to constantly repackage what experience you already have into a new career that you've never tried before. Then, when you grow tired of that, morph and adapt again - and again!

The Career Change series is about learning how to change as a normal course of habit. Once you learn how to navigate a new career, it becomes easier and easier to keep on changing. Because for high performers or anyone else who just wants to be happy in their careers: boredom is not an option.

Q - What makes you an expert in career change?

A - A lot of experts on career change are Human Resources (HR) pros who have studied what other people do. Not me.

I've worked over 60 jobs in my 39 years, reaching across a dozen industries, private and public sectors - and six countries. I went from fine arts to finance; hospitality to project management; client services to business process analysis. If there's a career out there, I've probably worked some role in it.

And that's what makes me uniquely qualified to talk about career change: I don't skim across theories that other people develop. I've lived it, I've done it.

Q - I want to love my job - how do I leave the job that I hate?

A - If you hate your job, you're in the clear majority! But the biggest mistake we can make is setting small targets for change. In this series you'll learn how to set BIG goals that seem ridiculously far away - but can be achieved way faster than you think. In no time at all, you'll be in a job that you love!

Q - In what order should I read the books?

A - Since the books build on a progressive set of ideas, you might be flying a bit blind if you jump out of sequence. To get the most of the Career Change series, you should probably read them in the following order:

1. Build A New Career! How to redefine your skills for a full-blown career change and get a new job you really want - no matter where you've been.

2. Get The Career You Deserve! How to build your network, leverage your connections, and sell your talents for a great new career change.

How to gradually transition from the current living conditions to the vision that you really want to achieve.

Take Back Your Life: Three Steps To Designing The Life You Really Want

If you're leading a life of "quiet desperation" rather than a vibrant, fulfilling life, and you want that to change, this book is for you.

Do you want more freedom in your life? More time to call your own? More energy? Work that you love?

Do you need inspiration to go after a dream? Wish you could get out of debt, maybe even retire much sooner than you ever thought possible?

None of that is easy, but it is much simpler than most people think. Developing that kind of freedom only requires three basic steps: setting your priorities, eliminating obstacles, and taking action. This book walks you through each of those three steps in detail. If you apply the information provided in this book, you will be able to make the changes in your life necessary to take back your life; that is, to make the positive changes that will lead to greater freedom for you.

If you don't like the way your life is going right now, and you're ready to do what it takes to change it, download this book now and read it from beginning to end. You've got nothing to lose.

Books That Change Lives: A Sampling from Patagonia Books

A sampling of titles available from Patagonia Books. Patagonia Books is intended as a way to advance our love of books as well as nature and a reflective life. We publish a select number of titles on wilderness, wildlife, and outdoor sports that inspire and restore connection to the natural world. We also present books that raise awareness about not only the environmental challenges our world faces, but suggest ways that we can work together to slow the disintegration of our planet. This includes immediate activities, such as strategies to reduce our carbon footprint, as well as more in-depth examinations of the meanings of affluence, consumerism, and capitalism in the 21st Century.

The Responsible Economy

We at Patagonia, like all business people, know that long-term income has to exceed long-term expense. To do otherwise is to go bankrupt, as Ernest Hemingway described,in the usual two ways: "Gradually, then suddenly."

Today we are using the equivalent resources of one and a half planets, yet we live on only one. All the indicators of earthly health are in decline: of water, air, arable land, fisheries and biodiversity. How do we reverse this decline in the quality of life (and attendant climate change) before it becomes sudden catastrophe?

Most conversations addressing that question hone in on technological solutions. Each year we attend sustainability conferences where the talk centers on innovation as the way to lower resource use and waste. But at these conferences, among decent people doing their best, there is always an elephant in the room, concealed behind a curtain few are willing to draw to the side. The elephant is growth-based capitalism, and the assumption that a growth economy equals prosperity and a healthy society. Yet we know we must consume less, and far more slowly - as well as innovate as quickly and ingeniously as we can.

What is a responsible economy? One that allows healthy communities, creates meaningful work, and takes from the earth only what it can replenish--one where all the indicators of health start to improve. What would make up this economy? What could a responsible economy look like? That's the question we'll explore with ourfriends and customers during the coming seasons.

The Ethics of Criticism

Ethical Codes and Income Distribution: A Study of John Bates Clark and Thorstein Veblen (Routledge Studies in the History of Economics)

In contemporary non-mainstream economic debate, it is widely thought that the functioning of a market economy needs a set of rules (i.e. institutions) which bind agents in their behaviour, allowing efficient outcomes. This idea is contrary to the General Equilibrium Model (GEM) where markets are pictured as working in an institutional vacuum and where social and historical variables play no role. However, in more recent times, a large group of economists have begun to insert social and moral variables into standard models based on the rational choice paradigm, following the increasing interest - on the part of firms - in the possible positive effects of adopting ethical codes. In this key new text Guglielmo Davanzati studies this burgeoning view that ethics and economics can be compatible. Does 'morality' affect income distribution? And, if so, what are the effects of the widespread adoption of ethical codes on the functioning of the labour market? Central to Davanzati's efforts is the thesis that the roots of these new developments can be traced back to the pioneering work of Thorstein Veblen and John Bates Clark. Utilizing their contrasting works, Davanzati's text illuminates the propagation of ethical codes within the two opposing frameworks i.e. the neoclassical and the institutional. Davanzati's important book will be an invaluable reference for readers interested in history of economic thought, economics and moral philosophy.

Transgovernance: Advancing Sustainability Governance

'Transgovernance: Advancing Sustainability Governance' analyses the question what recent and ongoing changes in the relations between politics, science and media - together characterized as the emergence of a knowledge democracy - may imply for governance for sustainable development, on global and other levels of societal decision making, and the other way around: How can the discussion on sustainable development contribute to a knowledge democracy? How can concepts such as second modernity, reflexivity, configuration theory, (meta)governance theory and cultural theory contribute to a 'transgovernance' approach which goes beyond mainstream sustainability governance? This volume presents contributions from various angles: international relations, governance and metagovernance theory, (environmental) economics and innovation science. It offers challenging insights regarding institutions and transformation processes, and on the paradigms behind contemporary sustainability governance. This book gives the sustainability governance debate a new context. It transforms classical questions into new options for societal decision making and identifies starting points and strategies towards effective governance of transitions to sustainability.

Higher order thinking:Upgrade your workplace thinking: Workplace skills (PersonalManagement Book 11)

How many times have we been crying and shouting hard, thinking that we are moving, but actually only touched ourselves.

After crying and shouting, you are still ordinary. Wiping your tears, you can only look at the master.

Why are we working hard, but we can't be masters?

Because the master will not tell you that the root cause difference is not the degree of effort, but the way of thinking.

The masters are burdened and multi-faceted, but they can be all-inclusive, like fish and water; and we forget to eat and sleep, but we are doing a lot of things.

The masters clearly do not have a lot of time to study, but they can evoke strong knowledge and speak amazingly; and we have a deep and painstaking study, but the results are very small and difficult to see.

The masters are strolling in the air, but they can beat the snake seven inches, and they are killed by one stroke; and we are exhausted and do our best, and we may not be able to cultivate positive results and suffer hardships.

In daily life and work, we often say that this person is very powerful, can see through the essence of things at a glance, clear thinking, logical and careful, comprehensive thinking without losing focus.
