Home & Garden Animal Care & Pets Books

A Night at the Animal Shelter

The Blithedale Animal Shelter has just ended its annual holiday sale for dogs, and miraculously all but a few have been adopted. An unexpected, welcome surprise for the shelter staff, and great news for the lucky pups who found homes. But for the dogs that remain--a high-strung Lab puppy, a three-legged Chihuahua, a Golden Retriever, a hard-luck Pit Bull Terrier; and a smart, old dog--it will be a lonely and cold Christmas Eve. Their favorite employee, Ginny Collins, is cozying up their cages and giving them some love before the shelter closes for the holiday. The sun is setting, but a night to remember is about to begin.

That is, until a stranger crashes the party in the most surprising way.

"Christmas Party" is a stand alone short story. It involves the characters of both the "Avery Barks Dog Mysteries" series and the "Shady Springs Dog Mysteries" series. These books can be read in any order.

Dog Love – An Unbreakable Bond: Inspirational Stories of Devotion, Loyalty and Courage

The bond between humans and dogs is more intense than our bond with any other species-there's not even a close second. Dogs are more than just a pet; they are trusted companions. They help us hunt, guard our homes, look after our livestock and even our children and, over time, do so many useful and wonderful things that it boggles the mind.

This compilation of heart-warming dog stories illustrates the pure love of these amazing creatures, including extraordinary instances and first-hand accounts of bravery, friendship, loyalty, devotion and companionship down to their very last breath.

There's a reason we call them man's best friend. No matter the situation, your dog is happy to see you. You are greeted with the same enthusiasm each and every time you walk in that door. A dog has the ability to live in the present moment. They don't regret the past or worry about the future.

While we often ask so much of them, they require almost nothing in return. You can ask your dog to chase a Frisbee, take a nap on the couch, herd some sheep, or run around a show ring and he'll do it, happily, for hours on end. He only wants to be fed, and told he's good, and most of all loved. If a dog has love, he really needs nothing else.

In the presence of a dog, somehow, nothing else matters. A dog is handing out pure love, sparing no expense, and asking absolutely nothing in return. Perhaps American Humorist Josh Billings said it best: "A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself."

The Cat Rescue Diaries: 56 True Life Stories of Cats Who Found Their Forever Homes, and the People Who Saved Them

Thousands of years ago, a cat purred, and humans listened. We were fascinated. Today, we're still fascinated by the purr, but in many cases, we've let our feline companions down. There are millions of homeless and hungry cats. These are but a few of the stories of the lucky ones, rescued from bad situations and given a place on easy street.

You'll be inspired, you'll be awed, and you'll say "awww" over stories about cats like these:

Ms. Sammy, the cat delivered to her "furever" home by the coroner.

Lima, the kitty with a horribly infected tail, but who never stopped purring in appreciation of her human's efforts to help her get well.

Hanuko, the rescue with two human mommies.

From tales of cats rescued from a warehouse, a barn, and even a coffee can, to heartwarming stories of feline determination and human compassion, every story in The Cat Rescue Diaries is evidence of what happens when good people seek out the purr and find their "purrfect" feline match.

The Cat Who Sang & Other Stories of Rescued Pets

This is a collection of stories about animals at Katie's Place, a small-animal shelter specializing in last-hope cases. Hundreds of animals have given volunteers years of joy and anguish. Some recovered against all odds and found homes. Some lived out their lives in shelter care. Each had a profound effect on the people who knew them. Among them was curmudgeonly Cubby who swatted his tail for waving in his face, and elderly Hannah who defended a volunteer under attack. Devilish Kris Kringle stole the latch pins for cages and delighted in watching people search for them. The job is a challenge but each volunteer would do it again in a heartbeat. If you enjoy the book, please adopt from your local shelter or volunteer, or take them some pet food or old towels. Barbara Yaffe, Vancouver Sun: "The book is well written and the cats' stories are tremendously moving."; Alan Woodland, Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows Times: "The Cat Who Sang is a generous book full of quiet heroes, human and animal."
