A History of Self-Harm in Britain: A Genealogy of Cutting and Overdosing (Mental Health in Historical Perspective)

This book is open access under a CC BY license and is the first account of self-harming behaviour in its proper historical and political context. The rise of self-cutting and overdosing in the 20th century is linked to the sweeping changes in mental and physical health, and wider political context. The welfare state, social work, Second World War, closure of the asylums, even the legalization of suicide, are all implicated in the prominence of self harm in Britain. The rise of 'overdosing as a cry for help' is linked to the integration of mental and physical healthcare, the NHS, and the change in the law on suicide and attempted suicide. The shift from overdosing to self-cutting as the most prominent 'self-damaging' behaviour is also explained, linked to changes in hospital organization and the wider rise of neoliberal politics. Appreciation of history and politics is vital to understanding the psychological concerns over these self-harming behaviours.

Dementia guide for Carers and Care Providers

If you care for someone with dementia, this guide is for you. Updated in 2017 with new information about dental care, end of life care, and preventing dementia onset. Links and references updated.

This guide offers practical information for anyone caring for a person with dementia, and has been developed in collaboration with healthcare professionals, educators and carers. The guide aims to support an understanding of the progressive nature of dementia and the challenges a person caring for someone with dementia may experience. Its focus is on living well with dementia.

It summarises many things you and the person you are caring for may need to think about. Some of the information here is important now. Other information will be useful later but is here for reference when you need it.

The guide contains six main sections:

- Understanding dementia: what it is, its symptoms and treatment

- Day-to-day-living: looking after the person with dementia, yourself, and the family

- Support: people and organisations who can help

- Legal and money: advice and sources of help

- Symptoms and behaviours: a look-up guide

- Medical terms: definitions of medical terms and abbreviations which medical professionals may use.

The guide has been developed by Health Education England Thames Valley, in partnership with the Centre for Information Design Research, University of Reading. The guide builds on the excellent work of Berkshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and the University of Reading, who jointly developed the hard-copy 'Dementia handbook for carers'. These organisations worked closely with a group of people who had first hand experience of caring for someone living with dementia. The original handbook was developed as part of a research project, funded by the 2012 Prime Minister's Dementia Challenge, to improve delivery of information to carers and to give them better access to local health, social and voluntary support and services.

Preying Indians

Preying Indians delivers a fascinating and unique exploration into the origin of America. The past is carefully displayed through a white man's Native American perspective, clearly portraying the great wickedness that had occurred in forming the southern New England Colonies. The history shared concludes in the year 1676, the same year that ended King Philip's life. King Phlip's war, as well as other tragic events, will help the reader become familiar with an amazing lost history. In a fashionable manner, Medonis elucidates the Connecticut River Valley's assiduous past. The birth of the United Colonies in 1643 displays the genesis of America's superior power, which was first practiced upon the Native American. Sadly, this method of governing a man of a different complexion seemingly destroyed all original local traditions. Depravity is clearly presented in several incidents throughout various New England plantations. One bright spot between Indian and the white man was witnessed in Martha's Vineyard- the Indian successfully became a Christian. Was conversion into a foreign religion a realistic vision for the Indian? Does the world of today reflect the views of "Preying Indians"?

The South Texas Health Status Review: A Health Disparities Roadmap

This book is a roadmap of the exact health disparities that burden the health of South Texas residents, especially Hispanics, compared to the rest of Texas and nation. This type of knowledge has the potential to fuel and motivate researchers and public health leaders to create and shape interventions to reverse those health disparities. Most notably, focus on obesity and diabetes prevention efforts and modifiable risk factors-such as nutrition, reproductive factors and access to health care-has significant potential to reduce the burden of disease in South Texas communities.South Texas, a 38-county region that spans 45,000 square miles along the Texas-Mexico border northward to the area around metropolitan Bexar County (home to San Antonio), is home to 18% of the state's population. Yet South Texas residents, who are 68% Hispanic, struggle with lower educational levels, less income and less access to health care-and, as a result, suffer from a wide variety of health disparities. To study the health status and identify the exact health disparities that exist in the region, researchers from The UT Health Science Center at San Antonio teamed with researchers from the Texas Department of State Health Services to develop the South Texas Health Status Review. The Review team analyzed a variety of the latest county, state and national data to compare South Texas' incidence, prevalence and mortality rates for more than 35 health indicators-from cancers to chronic diseases like diabetes to communicable diseases like HIV/AIDS to maternal health and even environmental health-to the rest of Texas and the nation by age, sex, race/ethnicity and rural/urban location.
